Glycation is wreaking havoc on the skin

What is Glycation?

Imagine you’re sitting at the bar with a group of friends, the long bar counter is the collagen and you’ve just drank a Cosmopolitan so you’re feeling a bit high on adrenalin and sugar, which naturally attracts more people to come hit on and talk to you. The guys checking you out see the long collagen support beam/ bar counter and walks over and bonds to the collagen by ordering another drink. That bondage is called Glycation, which damages the collagen. The damage transforms the molecule/ the bar counter into something known as Advanced Glycation End Product (AGE).

What it does:

image
The first day there’s nothing too noticeable, but the next day when you have some more sugar again including high Glycamic index foods, and continuously over the week after a period of time it builds up more, Glycation that damages the support structure. Eventually the collagen will become completely damaged that it will bend and snap. This means that it can no longer support the skin, thus this is how wrinkles are formed.

Sugar also causes breakouts (uh oh). When our insulin levels spike after eating foods in high GI, they promote inflammation and causes overgrowth and accumulation of cells. It also stimulates sebum production up to 60%, which can excaberate acne and cause those dreaded pimples to resurface.

How to prevent it:

A Low GI Diet is essential in maintaining a clear complexion. You know what they say, healthy on the inside leads to healthy on the out. A diet with a high GI could have terrible effects on your skin. The GI is a ranking of carb-rich foods based on their potential to increase blood sugar levels. High GI foods include ‘fast carbs’ such as bread, white potatoes, processed foods, refined grains, chips and cereals. Caffeine and artificial additives can also sneak into hidden foods, especially packet items. Avoiding high GI foods will help stop spikes in insulin and help regulate your skin. It’s important to reduce your sugar consumption to decrease the ageing process and avoid lifeless skin.

When you wake up
Wash your face with some cold water first (just to remove any dirt or oils) and apply an SPF based moisturiser, that way your skin is protected from the suns harmful UV rays and will last longer. Dryness makes skin rough, so the best way to smooth skin is to baby it with moisturiser. With such a variety of brands and products on the market, it does become overwhelming as to which ones really work just for you. The best option is to keep it simple and not over do it with a million different products, know your skin type and find a brand that will allow you to breathe and heal. Why not look for products with other face calming properties that will help minimise pores and imperfections such as aloe vera, oatmeal, honey or cinnamon!

Try Vaseline Total Moisture for dry skin. This works wonders on the skin in noticeably less than 48 hours as it’s a 24 hour nourishing lotion with multi layers of pure oat extract. It absorbs quickly leaving the skin feeling healthy, soft and smooth.

Also try Benefit Moisturiser Triple Performing Face Emulsion. Not only does this skin saving beauty keep your face looking radiant and lustrous but it’s oil free and contains SPF 15+. Either one of these will do the trick so why not try alternating between the two each morning, that way you’ll know what works and your skin won’t build a tolerance to one product.

In the shower and out
Ever heard of dry body brushing? Well now you have, using a large exfoliating brush with one of your favourite lotions (personally, strawberry is a winner) simply scrub to your hearts content gently in the shower. It’s a great way to penetrate the skin by removing dead skin cells, allowing new skin cells to surface. Bonus it also reduces the appearance of cellulite and gets blood flow pumping, thus improves circulation in the body and will help oxygen flow better to the face. If you don’t have a body brush, a loofah does alternatively the same thing. Don’t forget to exfoliate the face too! When you get out of the shower, again it’s time to moisture but this time the whole body. That way you’ll be as smooth as a baby’s bottom from head to toe.
